African Americans and Fortsville

Many African Americans have lived at Fortsville along with whites since 1792. The first were slaves. Later some lived here as hired servants. We can only imagine what the Lord has for the future.

One person some of whose ancestors had such relationships to Fortsville is Stuart W. Doyle.  His book on his own family illustrates the relationship of African Americans, not only to Fortsville, but to all of Southside Virginia.

Roots exposed : the lineage and interrelationships of 15 family branches from Virginia’s Sussex, Southampton, and Greensville counties / by Stuart W. Doyle.
